Frequently Asked Questions

Everything wholesale buyers need to know about sourcing non-GMO sunflower lecithin from PrimeBlend.

What is sunflower lecithin?

Sunflower lecithin is a natural mixture of phospholipids — primarily phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylethanolamine — extracted from sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus) during oil refining. It is one of the world's most widely used food emulsifiers and serves as a clean-label alternative to soy lecithin in bakery, confectionery, plant-based foods, dietary supplements, and pharmaceuticals. The U.S. FDA classifies lecithin as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) under 21 CFR § 184.1400, with no use-level limit beyond Good Manufacturing Practice.

How is sunflower lecithin different from soy lecithin?

Sunflower lecithin offers four structural advantages over soy: (1) inherently non-GMO — no commercial GMO sunflower exists anywhere in the world, while approximately 94% of U.S. soybeans are genetically modified; (2) no allergen declaration required — sunflower is not on the FDA's Big 9 allergen list, while soy must be declared under FALCPA; (3) solvent-free extraction — sunflower lecithin is cold-pressed, leaving zero detectable hexane residues, versus typical soy lecithin which contains under 10 ppm residual hexane; (4) higher phosphatidylcholine content (23–25% vs 19–21% in soy), making it more valuable for nutraceutical applications.

Is PrimeBlend's sunflower lecithin non-GMO?

Yes — and this is structurally guaranteed, not merely a quality-management claim. No genetically modified sunflower seeds have ever been commercially grown or government-approved anywhere in the world. PrimeBlend's supplier maintains Non-GMO Project Verified documentation for full chain-of-custody traceability. Organic-certified sunflower lecithin (USDA NOP / EU Organic) will be available from PrimeBlend in 2027 as our supplier's organic seed sourcing program comes online.

Where is PrimeBlend's lecithin produced?

PrimeBlend imports food-grade sunflower lecithin directly from Ukraine — the world's largest sunflower oil exporter, accounting for approximately 50% of global sunflower oil exports. Our supplier facility holds active FSSC 22000 v6.0 certification (the latest mandatory version since April 1, 2024), along with Halal, Kosher, ISO 22000, and Non-GMO documentation. Each shipment includes a complete Certificate of Analysis (CoA), supplier certificates, and full FSVP-compliant import documentation.

What is phosphatidylcholine (PC), and why does it matter?

Phosphatidylcholine is the principal phospholipid in sunflower lecithin and the bioactive component in liver, brain, and cardiovascular health supplements. Industrial buyers care about PC content for two reasons: emulsification potency — higher PC concentration delivers stronger emulsion stability per unit weight; and nutraceutical value — PC is the active ingredient in many cognitive- and liver-health supplements. PrimeBlend offers two PC tiers: 20% PC for general food applications (bakery, chocolate, plant-based foods) and 35% PC for premium and nutraceutical formulations.

What industries use sunflower lecithin?

The major end-use categories worldwide (Innova Market Insights data): Confectionery — 33.5% of all lecithin applications, reducing chocolate viscosity by 10–30%, preventing fat bloom, and enabling molding at lower cocoa-butter levels. Bakery — 30.5% of applications, as a dough conditioner, antistaling agent, natural pan release, and gluten network strengthener. Plant-based foods (oat milk, almond milk, vegan cheese, plant-based meat) — fastest-growing segment; HLB approximately 7 makes sunflower lecithin ideal for oil-in-water emulsions. Margarine, spreads, and emulsified fats — primary water-in-oil emulsifier. Infant formula — high-purity sunflower lecithin as oil-in-water emulsifier; allergen-free profile critical for this segment. Nutraceuticals and dietary supplements — softgels, liquid supplements, cognitive- and liver-health formulations. Cosmetics and personal care — natural emulsifier in clean-beauty formulations. Animal feed — palatability and fat-absorption enhancer in livestock and aquaculture diets.

Is sunflower lecithin solvent-free?

Yes. PrimeBlend's sunflower lecithin is produced through mechanical cold-press extraction — no hexane or other chemical solvents are involved. Independent testing confirms 0 ppm hexane residues (non-detectable by GC-MS). This is a defining advantage over conventional soy lecithin, which is a byproduct of hexane-based soybean oil refining and typically contains under 10 ppm residual hexane. Cold-press extraction also retains up to 15% more natural Vitamin E (tocopherols) and is required for organic certification under USDA NOP.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

PrimeBlend's MOQ is 1 IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) of 1,000 kg net weight. This is one of the lowest minimums in the U.S. wholesale lecithin market and is a deliberate competitive choice — Tier-1 importers (Cargill, ADM) typically impose 1–5 metric ton minimums or full-container loads, putting them out of reach for small and mid-size manufacturers. PrimeBlend's IBC-level minimum makes premium non-GMO sunflower lecithin accessible to artisan, craft, and mid-market food brands.

What documentation comes with each shipment?

Each PrimeBlend shipment includes a complete documentation pack: Certificate of Analysis (CoA) — phospholipid profile, acid value, moisture, peroxide value, heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), aflatoxin (B1 + total), and full microbiological panel (TPC, yeast and mold, E. coli, Salmonella); Supplier certificates — FSSC 22000 v6.0, Halal, Kosher, Non-GMO, ISO 22000; FSVP records — Foreign Supplier Verification Program documentation as required under 21 CFR Part 1, Subpart L; Country-of-origin and HTS classification — HTS 2923.20.20.00; Lot, batch, and traceability data — every IBC labeled with lot number, production date, CoA reference, and supplier facility identifier.

How long does shipping take from Ukraine to the U.S.?

Typical transit time is 20–35 days from Black Sea or Baltic ports to East Coast U.S. ports (Newark / NY / NJ), depending on routing. PrimeBlend's direct Ukraine-to-USA pipeline — through a Cyprus-based trading and logistics intermediary — is faster than competitors who route through Western European trading hubs (25–40 days) or Asian intermediaries (45–60 days). Customs clearance, FSVP verification, and drayage from port to our New Jersey 3PL warehouse typically add 5–7 business days. For repeat customers, lead time from purchase order to delivery at the customer's facility is generally 30–45 days.
